Featured Center for the Arts Programs:

ADULT CLASSES:

Age 18 & up

For painters, drawing is an intrinsic part of art, yet many are intimidated by it. We’ll simplify the process and train our eyes to really see our subject while exploring value, proportion, lighting, motion, and composition. Students should bring a sketchbook and drawing pencils; other materials will be provided. Tuesday mornings.

Age 18 & up

Every artist, regardless of style or media, can benefit from observational drawing skills. Reproducing what you see may seem impossible, but the methods are simple and approachable. Using what we learn, we’ll apply those skills to create our own images, characters, and subjects from imagination. Students should bring a large sketchbook, drawing pencils, an eraser, and a sharpener. Tuesday afternoons.

Age 16 & up

Calling All Lovebirds! Toucan have a hoot together at this uniquely crafty date night while you each make your own adorable soft owl or native Illinois bird! No eggs-perience necessary as our instructor will guide you both through every step of the process. Each participant must register and pay the workshop fee. Tuesday evening, 11/12.

Age 21 & up

Our Wilmette Park District Tradition is back! Start with a box house and cover with our handmade frosting. Embellish with candy, cookies, and goodies. Be sure to bring your imagination and a box or tray to carry your confection home. Adults are welcome to make their own or work alongside their child or register for the popular Adult Gingerbread House Workshop. The fee is per gingerbread house. Register by Wednesday, November 20th. Friday or Saturday evening, 12/6 or 12/7.

Age 18 & up

This instructor-led class is designed to introduce beginning participants to techniques involved in hand building, throwing on the wheel and glazing a variety of clay forms, as well as building the experience and knowledge of the long-time student. We provide all materials including clay, glaze and basic tools. Open studio time also available. Monday through Saturday, varying times.

Age 15 & up

Have you always wanted to learn how to tap? Join in the fun of tap dancing! Exercise your body and mind while learning a variety of tap dance steps and choreographed routines. All levels welcome. Tap shoes required. Monday evenings.

Age 15 & up

Jazz dance combines classical ballet and modern dance technique with contemporary influences. Musical theater incorporates this technique while introducing the student to Broadway styles of the past two decades. A strong emphasis is placed on energy, rhythmical accuracy, showmanship, and style. Jazz or ballet shoes required. Wednesday evenings.

Age 15 & up

The Ballet Barre, of course! This class will focus on strength, core, flexibility, and focus by combining ballet and Pilates. Basic ballet techniques at the barre and across the floor steps fill the first half of class, moving into Pilates for the second half. Sign up for this class while your child is across the hall taking a ballet class of their own! Ballet shoes recommended, otherwise socks or bare feet. Floor mats are provided if you do not have one of your own. Monday evenings.

Age 15 & up

Come enjoy the beauty and grace of classical ballet! This class will cover basic ballet positions, steps, and vocabulary with a focus on the student’s awareness of proper posture and body alignment. Standing barre work and center floor exercises will enhance coordination, strength, balance, and flexibility. Participants will also develop a sense of musical awareness and movement quality. No prior ballet experience necessary. Ballet shoes required. Wednesday evenings.

MUSIC LESSONS:

Age 5 & up

Whether you’re ready to rock or looking to level up your classical percussion skills, our new drum lessons are for students of all ages, interests, and skill levels. Beginners will learn the different parts of the drum kit, posture, grip, basic patterns, and keeping a beat. More advanced students can study rhythm theory, technique, different musical styles, and more difficult combos. Great for developing coordination and motor skills in young children! Drum kit provided on site. Each lesson 30 minutes. The instructor will contact you individually to schedule lessons. Wednesday afternoons/evenings.

Age 8 & up

Learn guitar, bass guitar or ukulele! Students of all skill levels and interests are taught the basics with instruction on chords, songs, how to read notes, time signatures, and scales. Each lesson is 30 minutes, tailored to the level and interest of the student, and explores styles such as rock, alternative, blues, folk, jazz and classical. The instructor will contact you individually to schedule lessons. Tuesday afternoons/evenings.

Featured General Recreation Programs:

Age 4-12 w/ adult

Enjoy an hour long yoga class geared towards both kids and parents working together in this fun yoga class run by Chicago Loves Dance. Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Age 5-15 (5-10, 6-12, 11-15)

This class is run by professional yoga instructors from Chicago Loves Dance. In class kids will learn beginning yoga movements, terms and yoga based games to make learning fun. Yoga in childhood is wonderful for improving listening skills, building self-esteem and supporting social and emotional learning. Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Sunday midday.

Age 6-12

Under the creative direction of skilled Chicago Loves Dance break dancers, students will learn choreography and poses, show off their creativity in free-style sessions and more. Chicago Loves Dance runs on the philosophy that dance should open your child’s creative abilities and be FUN! We pride ourselves on teaching the self-esteem and socialization needed in everyday life through the activity of dance and performance. The last day of the class will be a parent watch day where they will do a short performance to show off their new talents. Tuesday evenings.

Age 6-12

Under the direction of Chicago Loves Dance instructors, Students will learn cheers as well as poms choreography weekly in this upbeat class. They will learn 3-4 new cheers weekly, work on form, as well as add on to their poms dance routine. The last day of the class will be a parent watch day where they will do a short performance. Tuesday evenings.

ENGAGING ACTIVITIES:

Age 3-8

Mindfulness can build new neural connections making us calmer, happier, and more resilient. Storytime and Mindfulness class is a fun and engaging way to slow down and connect with your child. Local author Michele Foote will read her picture books, What Should We Do Today, Mommy?, Love You to Pieces, and Playdate In Outer Space, along with several other picture books to encourage mindfulness!  Michele will discuss the joy of being in the present moment and seeing the world through the fresh eyes of a child. You’ll practice simple breathing exercises, engage in playful games and crafts, and practice gratitude by exploring the “magic” in ordinary days through drawing and journaling.  Recent research is proving that mindfulness leads to greater overall physical and mental health and ignites passion and creativity! This class will inspire you and your child to practice mindfulness as your children grow. Any adult is welcome to attend with the child. Saturday mornings.

Age 5-8

Instructors will help sharpen your skills in math, science, geography, language arts and reading through fun, hands-on thematic based activities. Science will come alive through our exploration of rocks and minerals, flight, weather, health and safety, computers; explore math learning about money, geometry and shapes; travel to China, Ancient Egypt, Italy, Washington DC or Australia! Explore the animal kingdom and dive deep into the oceans! Take home fun topic related souvenirs too! Topics rotate each session-19 topics in all! Monday afternoons.

Age 5-10

Learning Spanish is as easy as uno, dos, tres! In Afterschool Amigos Spanish club, children will learn numbers, colors, shapes, greetings, days of the week and more. We will be singing, clapping, and counting our way towards learning the Spanish Language. Friday evenings.

Age 5-13

The Healthy Habits Club from Afterschool Enrichment Solutions provides a fun, action-packed and positive environment to promote physical, mental and emotional health! Students will explore themes of communication, compassion for self and others, active listening, conflict resolution, gentle exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, and respect. A qualified instructor will guide the participants in hands-on learning through games, movement, creative writing, problem-solving exercises and journaling. Thursday evenings.

Age 8-13 (8-10, 11-13)

Let’s help our kiddos ask questions and be relentlessly curious about the universe we live in! If they’ve ever expressed an interest or love for space, astronomy or the mysteries of the cosmos, they might love this class. Using a lot of visuals, games, real telescope time and good ol’ fashioned discussion, we explore our solar system, our galaxy and beyond looking at meteors, asteroids and comets, black holes, exoplanets and more along the way! Wednesday afternoons/evenings.

Featured Mallinckrodt Programs:

Age 21 & up

Have fun with watermedia! Explore transparent watercolor and opaque gouache, watercolor pencils, colored pencils and pen and ink. We’ll unlock our creativity with easy exercises and projects. Bring a multimedia paper pad, pencil, eraser and a sense of adventure to class! Thursday afternoons.

Age 21 & up

Navigate techniques, materials, color, drawing and inspiration to paint in the medium of watercolor. Students at all levels will have fun creating satisfying projects in watercolor and building their skills. Our instructor, Nancy Rose, studied at the American Academy of Art and the Evanston Art Center. She has been painting in watercolor for decades, and has been teaching private clients for many years. Join us in this relaxed, supportive setting, and grow together. Please ask for a supply list at time of registration. Monday afternoons.

Age 21 & up

Everybody draws! Learn–or relearn–drawing fundamentals in this low pressure class for adults. We will explore a variety of materials and approaches to drawing. Whatever your level of experience, learn and practice perspective, proportions, shading and line in a supportive and fun group setting. Supply kits can be provided for a nominal extra fee. Professional artist Nancy Rose Instructs. Thursday mornings.
