Bird Flu Alert: What You Need To Know
Recent reports indicate an increase in dead or dying birds along the Wilmette lakefront and other Chicago and North Shore areas. These birds are suspected of being infected with bird flu (Avian Influenza). While the risk to humans is low, it is important to take precautions and know how to respond if you encounter an affected bird.
What Should You Do If You Find a Dead or Dying Bird?
- Avoid Handling Birds: Do not touch dead, dying, or healthy-looking wild birds, as they may carry the virus without showing symptoms.
- Reporting on Park District Property: If you find a dead or dying bird on Wilmette Park District property, contact Alissa Paquette at apaquette@wilpark.org or call 847-256-9629. Do not attempt to remove the bird yourself.
- Reporting Off Park Property: If the bird is found outside Park District property, contact the Wilmette Police non-emergency line at 847-256-1200.
- Large Clusters of Dead Birds: If you find five or more dead birds in one area, report them to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) District Wildlife Biologist or USDA Wildlife Services at 866-487-3297.
General Precautions
- Keep Your Distance: For safety, avoid contact with wild birds, whether they appear sick or healthy.
- Pet Safety: Keep pets away from sick or dead birds to prevent possible exposure.
- Safe Bird Removal: If necessary, follow guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health by wearing gloves, goggles, and a mask, avoiding face contact, and washing hands thoroughly afterward.
