Phase 1 of the Gillson Infrastructure Improvement Project Begins

10/29/24 – Phase 1 of the Gillson Infrastructure Improvement Project Begins!

At Wilmette Park District, we’re committed to the long-term care and improvement of Gillson Park, a cherished community landmark since 1911. The Gillson Infrastructure Improvement Project, designed to address critical repairs and create a safer, more accessible space, began Phase 1 on October 21, 2024. Here’s what you need to know about the project’s progress and what to expect when you visit the park.

What’s Happening?

The entire project focuses on upgrades throughout Gillson Park, including repairs to sewers, water and electrical services, roadway resurfacing, and new sidewalks for safer pedestrian circulation. The project intends to preserve the park’s natural beauty while enhancing its infrastructure and accessibility for future generations. We’re also adding a bike-only lane and walkways to improve safety and flow within the park.

Project Timeline

Phase 1 started on October 21, covering half of Gillson Park with construction zones along Harbor Drive, Middle Drive and Overlook Drive. Here’s what’s underway:

  • Roadway Milling: Crews have started milling road surfaces on Overlook Drive, Middle Drive, and sections of Harbor Drive.
  • Demolition of Old Sidewalks and Curbs: Old concrete sidewalks, curbs, and sections of roadway will be removed to make way for new pathways.
  • Storm Sewer Work: The next step involves installing new storm sewer systems to improve drainage and minimize future erosion.

What Should You Expect When Visiting?

We’re working to minimize disruptions to parkgoers while prioritizing safety. Visitors to Gillson Park during Phase 1 may notice:

  • Temporary Closures & Fencing: Portions of the park are closed to ensure safety around active work zones. Additional fencing and wayfinding signs will help guide you around construction areas.
  • Fencing Around Trees: These temporary fences keep our beloved trees safe during construction.
  • Revised Traffic & Access Routes: Expect adjusted pathways and temporary traffic changes. Please refer to our Project Page for an up-to-date map of accessible areas and traffic flow updates.

Stay Informed!

We’re aiming to complete Phase 1 after the new year despite winter weather, and we anticipate wrapping up the full project by late spring 2025. Please stay connected with us through our Project Page, where you’ll find the latest news, a detailed construction map, and real-time updates on progress and park access.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to make Gillson Park safer and more enjoyable for all!
