But can a summer job lead to anything? You bet! Roberta Muller was a camp counselor and quickly realized she wanted to work with young children. After four years in summer camp serving as a counselor and later as a director, Roberta is now a teacher in the Park District’s Early Childhood Center Preschool.
She never attended camp as a child herself but had previously enjoyed working with kids. “I thought that it would be a fun summer experience, and I find working with children is always so entertaining and fulfilling.”
Roberta said she had always considered working with young children professionally, and her time at camp solidified that desire. “I was able to work with different age groups in my time as a camp counselor, and once I worked with pre-k kids I knew that was the age group I wanted to teach,” she said. Roberta decided to stay with Wilmette Park District after having a great experience working at camp. “I knew it would be a great place for me to keep learning and developing my professional skills.”
Working at camp isn’t just for those looking to go into education or work with children. Roberta said she developed many skills that are important in numerous fields. “Working with children keeps you on your toes! I learned to be a good listener and dependable. And maybe most importantly, I grew more confident speaking up for myself and for others.”
