TGIF Skate Makes a Groovy Comeback

The return of TGIF Skate at Centennial Ice Rink was a hit, welcoming an estimated 80 skaters of all ages for a fun, 1970s-themed night on the ice. The event marked the comeback of a longtime favorite, drawing both current skaters and parents who once attended TGIF Skates themselves.

“What made it especially memorable was bringing back an event that current parents of our contemporary skaters used to attend,” said Florence Krieger, Figure Skating Supervisor. “The parents all talk about how large and how much fun it was.”

TGIF Skate began around 2008 or 2009 and soon became a popular tradition, with DJs, glow giveaways, and so many attendees that security was needed. “I experienced it with my own girls attending in the early 2010s and they loved it,” Krieger said. “It turned into a middle school night out without parents.”

This year’s event brought back the same excitement with disco music, games, glow sticks and lots of skating fun. Participants gave very positive feedback. “They were extremely complimentary of the event, theme and experience,” Krieger said. “They are all looking forward to the next one.”
