Why Do We Close Fields?

For the safety of participants, coaches and officials, as well as the facilities themselves, we occasionally have to close fields, courts and other facilities due to conditions caused by weather or other unexpected emergencies. Decisions made by the Wilmette Park District in regard to facility and field closures are final.

Coaches, referees, officials and organizations using our fields must practice good judgment and cancel practices and games when fields are closed and should exit fields when conditions deteriorate to a point where the safety of participants or damage to the field is likely.
Some examples of conditions requiring field closure include:

  • Standing puddles of water on the field
  • Ground is waterlogged and squishy
  • A footstep leaves an impression in the turf
  • Grass is easily dislodged from the ground
  • Field is frozen
  • Lightning

When our fields remain open during inclement weather, it is the decision of the individual (or parent/guardian of minors) to attend the scheduled activity. Refunds are not given unless the activity is cancelled by Wilmette Park District.

Why Do We Close Beaches?

Our beaches may close due to weather, rip currents or bacteria.

  • If lightning or thunder is detected, the beach and water will be cleared for at least 30 minutes.
  • Please note, no refunds are given for inclement weather or beach closure.

Why Do We Cancel Events?

Many of our Special Events take place outdoors. We try to host events rain or shine; however, in cases of extreme inclement weather, we will cancel or postpone an event as necessary. In the event of a cancellation, we will post an update on the related Rainout Line extension. In the case of paid events, registered patrons will be notified via email.

When we proceed to host an event in minor inclement weather, it is the decision of the individual (or parent/guardian of minors) to attend the Special Event. In the case of paid events, refunds are not given unless the activity is cancelled by Wilmette Park District.

What About Activites Held at Non-Park District Facilities?

  • District 39 – When School District 39 facilities close, all Park District programs offered at District 39 locations are cancelled. On school days off and seasonal breaks, we offer childcare programs at our facilities. Learn more on our Before and After School Programs page.
  • Village of Wilmette – Some of our Special Events are held on Village property, and we work closely with the Village of Wilmette to ensure the safety of participants and staff. In the case of extreme inclement weather, we will follow our general Special Events procedure (see above).
