Touch the Sky with a new StoryWalk® at Vattmann Park

Spring is here, and with it comes a beloved community favorite—the return of the StoryWalk® at Vattmann Park! This season, visitors can follow the path around the park and enjoy the picture book Touch the Sky by Stephanie V. W. Lucianovic, a heartwarming tale about courage, friendship, and learning new skills.

The Story

Touch the Sky follows Vern, a young boy who dreams of soaring on the swings like the other kids. But there’s just one problem—he doesn’t know how to pump. His journey toward confidence and independence begins when he meets a new friend who helps him rise to the challenge, literally and figuratively.

Reading + Nature = Magic

The StoryWalk® is more than just a stroll through a park—it’s an enriching experience that combines literacy, physical activity and scenic views of Wilmette. Studies show that time outdoors boosts mood and attention while reading together builds language skills and emotional connection.

Combined, these experiences nurture body and mind, encouraging growth, curiosity, and imagination. It’s a perfect activity for families looking to unplug, explore, and bond over a shared story.

A Community Collaboration

The Wilmette StoryWalk® is the result of a continued partnership between Wilmette Park District and Wilmette Public Library and our passion for promoting lifelong learning, outdoor recreation, and community engagement.

The StoryWalk® will remain in place through the fall, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy this season’s story, soak in the sunshine, and maybe even swing a little higher.

The StoryWalk® Project was originally created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont, and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Wilmette Public Library and the Wilmette Park District have adapted it for use in Wilmette.
