New Interpretive Signs Debut at Gillson Park and Langdon Beach
11/26/2025
New interpretive signs have been installed throughout Gillson Park and Langdon Beach, providing visitors with an easy and engaging way to learn about the unique environments and history of our lakefront. These signs emphasize the ecological significance of the wildflower preserve, bird habitat, beach dunes, and bluff restoration. Topics include the role of native plants and pollinators, the migratory birds supported along the Mississippi Flyway, and the historical development of Gillson and Langdon’s shoreline. The signage also details ongoing coastal protection efforts, such as erosion control and native habitat restoration.
This project was supported by funding from the Illinois Coastal Management Program grant, which specifically enabled the manufacturing and installation of the signage. By combining grant resources with the Park District’s design expertise, we have enhanced educational opportunities in our parks without additional cost.
Communicating the stories of our shoreline, including its plant life, wildlife, and historical context, enables visitors to better understand the significance of these natural areas and the importance of their protection. Through accessible educational content and stewardship messaging, these signs encourage all visitors to Gillson and Langdon to appreciate, respect, and contribute to the care of Wilmette’s coastal environment.
We encourage all community members to visit the parks, engage with the new interpretive signs, and join us in protecting and celebrating Wilmette’s lakefront.
