Nuts & Bolts: January 2024
Each day, our Parks and Planning team digs into a busy schedule of essential work across the Wilmette Park District’s parks and facilities. You may not catch all the exciting things–big and small–that our crews work hard to make happen, whether it’s horticultural and landscape work, seasonal maintenance, or property improvements. Nuts & Bolts is your behind-the-scenes overview of projects around the District.
Parks & Planning Department Updates
We hope you all enjoyed the mild start to winter and took advantage of the warmer temperatures last month – our Parks and Planning crews did! No snow meant our teams could set down the salt and shovels and check off a few more projects before year’s end.
Grab your athletic shoes and scoot over to the freshly-resurfaced hardwood floors at Mallinckrodt – courtesy of the Parks and Planning crew. Our Wood Floor Room hosts a variety of fitness classes for adults to stay active and warm, even in the chilliest of seasons!
Parks crews bustled around the District, completing a variety of outdoor projects. Planning ahead for summer fun, the crew installed new volleyball posts at Gillson Beach and built a new baseball mound at West Park.
A car drives into a planter…It’s not the start of a joke; it happened last March and again in December! Our poor raised plant bed at Central & Sheridan has had a rough go of it. Thankfully, the Parks crew knows exactly what to do! A little restacking, some fresh soil, and the planter is back in action! #StartSeeingPlanters
Rounding off the month, Parks crews slipped in some routine tree maintenance – a beneficial practice to help hibernating tree canopies stay well-manicured and ready for spring growth.
The Building crew accomplished a few more repairs before the holidays arrived – they replaced the water fountain at Centennial Recreation Complex and repaired the hot water heater and installed an expansion tank at the Wilmette Golf Club.
